Although playwrights and critics have a tricky relationship, especially when there is a generational gap as well as a stark difference in taste and/or belief system of what theater can be nowadays, I can’t help but love this response to Christine Dolton’s scathing review of my play, Death For Sydney Black that was published in the Miami Herald last week. I swear I did not pay this guy to write this, nor did I know he was doing it. So if you’re reading this, thanks:)
The fact that audiences can now defend an artists work publicly is inherently fascinating. Another favorite example of mine is James Carter’s recent blog post re: Time Out New York’s review of Hand To God, which further enforces how the relationship between audiences and critics have changed. I wonder how this is going to evolve and what role the critic will play as the next generation, who has been blogging basically since birth, begins to reach adulthood.
Anyways…if you’re in Florida go see my play! Aside from being called “…..sexually denigrating” it’s gotten quite a few raves like “sharp”, “Insighful”, “…never sugar coated”, “socially conscious” and “deftly handles these collective fourth wall-shattering moments without spiraling into cheap pastiche”. More importantly though, the passionate ladies behind the production, Axy Carrion-Bannon and Nicole Stoddard , along with the cast, are so amazing.
